Probably one of the most well-known Massachusetts communities outside of Boston is Salem. It was settled in 1626 and has been a cornerstone of history ever since the first settlers arrived. With its great location by the ocean, Salem has had many contributions to the economy from the ocean, agriculture, and academia over the years. Tourism is at the heart of Salem today, where visitors come to see monuments and museums that are found on every street, taking in that historical atmosphere. The Salem Witch Trials are found at the core of Salem's identity, and the bustling community embraces it. Witches are displayed in a variety of different symbols across the town, and the pirating history is embraced as well. With so many tourists and with the added excitement of movies being made in the area, the community has cherished its unique history and used it as a way to promote Salem. Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Some of the freshest seafood dishes in New England are found at Turner's Seafood. While dining in this 19th-century restaurant, you can enjoy a raw oyster bar, appreciating that historical charm. Visit the Pickering Wharf Marina to access a number of restaurants on the water and view some of the most luxurious yachts in the harbor. One of these restaurants is Longboards Restaurant and Bar, which offers a menu full of enticing options, from the backyard burger to the house quesadilla. At the Salem Waterfront Hotel, hungry diners can head to the Regatta Pub for exquisite breakfast, lunch, and dinner selections. 
 

Things to Do

Probably the biggest annual celebration in Salem is the Haunted Happenings on Essex St. These spooky festivities are the perfect way to ring in the Halloween holiday. Thousands of visitors don their costumes and flock to the area for parades, walking tours, special psychic booths and seances, haunted houses, magic shows, and much more. 
 
If you want to take a historical trail adventure out in the quieter area of Salem, visit the Derby Wharf. This is a great place to walk and view the light station out on the water, which assists ships entering Salem Harbor. 
 
If you’re seeking a day of family fun, Salem Willows Park is a great spot. This historic park along the waterfront is complete with arcade games and prizes, bumper cars, a batting cage, and fantastic food. Plus, the grounds are an excellent place for a picnic or spending some time by the shore. Often, the park hosts vendors, food trucks, and small events with live music. 
While in Salem, you don’t want to miss a visit to the Salem Witch Museum for an up-close look at all the different historical artifacts, documents, and other items dating back several centuries.
